Ghana has been re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027 to 2029 term. President Mahama commended the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for leading the campaign.

Speaking at the commissioning of new ambassadors on 16 October, the President urged Ghana’s Permanent Representative-designate in Geneva to uphold international law, build coalitions with African countries and make sure international rules take account of developing economies. He also pointed to the government’s Accra Reset agenda on global health governance and local pharmaceutical production.

Why it matters

A seat on the Council is influence that has to be used. Ghana’s value there will rest on consistent, principled positions, which are easier to sustain when the same standards are visible at home.
