President Mahama has urged Ghanaian businesses to make commercial use of research from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). Speaking at a fair themed “From Research to Market”, he said Ghana’s economic transformation depends on turning research into products and services.
He said many promising innovations stay at the prototype stage because of limited financing, few testing opportunities and weak links with industry. He asked the CSIR to develop business cases, and called on small businesses, start-ups, banks and development partners to invest. He cited CSIR work on a wheat variety suited to Ghana, along with climate-smart agriculture and food processing, as support for the Feed Ghana Programme.

Why it matters
Africa rarely lacks ideas. It lacks the institutions that carry ideas into production. Financing, standards and procurement that favour local innovation are governance choices, and they decide whether research becomes value at home.
